Severance

Directed by Ben Stiller and now on AppleTV+, 2022's Severance is a near-perfectly executed exploration into one simple premise: what would it be like if you could totally sever your work life from your personal one? And then another question. What are they actually doing?

Lumon, a mysterious global conglomerate, gives employees the opportunity to sever all ties with the outside world. At work is a seemingly utopian community, guided by the principles of their god-like founder. Of course it’s really a slow burning dystopian nightmare, and it’s well worth exploring the troubling skeletons in Lumon’s closet.

The show, like many of the best dramas, opens with a disappearance. From there we’re plunged into a world of intrigue, suspense and crazy attention to detail. The outstanding writing and pacing reveals just enough information to keep viewers guessing but plenty of room for speculation. With every question answered, it’s as though four more crop up.

Adam Scott leads Severance’s ensemble cast, delivering powerful performances. Primarily viewed from the perspective of their ‘innies’ - their worklife selves - at first they appear to be 2D caricatures of stereotypical office personalities. Watch on as each slowly demonstrates more nuance than the last as they begin to understand and solve the devastating puzzle of Lumon.

We slowly begin to understand how each core character interlinks with their outside selves (reversely termed ‘outies’). As they unearth their pasts, their motivations, and their dreams, the heavy investment in character pays off in spades and culminates in one of the most impactful finales I’ve ever seen.

What ultimately sets Severance apart is the unique blend of science fiction, comedy and drama. Although set in a recognisable world, there are constant hints towards something sinister at play beneath the surface - using an unsettling brand of comedy as an outlet for this. That eerie and unsettling atmosphere swells and will leave you on the edge of your seat come the conclusion.

Any Good? Sever your ties to other shows and go watch it now!
